Nerdlocker Movie Review: Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour is a film about newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during the early days of World War II, and his decision to either enter into surrender talks with Hitler, or continue to fight against staggering odds.

Spoiler Alert- he doesn’t surrender.

Knowing what Churchill’s decision would be before the movie even started did not diminish the film in anyway. Gary Oldman once again proves that he is a master of his craft. He so fully embodies the role of Churchill that at times I honestly forgot that I wasn’t watching Churchill, and that is a rare treat for me. The supporting cast is lovely but almost become background to the presence of Oldman’s Churchill – they are scenery for him to chew on. It is not often that a biopic moves me to tears, I am not a movie crier, but this one got me. Seeing the strength and courage that the people who lived through such adversity and tragedy would have had to possess be played out with such grace, care, and respect on screen was as much a joy as it was heartbreaking.

Look for this film to be nominated for at least 2 Oscars this award season – Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Makeup for Kazuhiro Tsuji.
