Mama’s Boys Movie Review: The Greatest Showman

0

There is hardly a place you can go in the world without having heard of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The Greatest Showman is about the beginning of that story, how PT Barnum became the “Prince of Humbugs” and creator of the modern day circus. I took my boys for some popcorn (hey, it’s the circus, right?) and to see a movie about “The Greatest Show on Earth”.

(NOTES: “RS” is me, “ES” is my 9 year old and “MS” is my 6 year old)

RS: Boys, did you like movie today?

Both: YES! (we were in the lobby of the theater when I conducted this interview and they shouted so loud people stopped to look at us)

RS: What was your favorite part of the movie?

ES: At the end when Barnum (Hugh Jackman) passes his hat and the show to Carlyle (Zac Efron). Everyone is so excited for the next parts of their lives and the song is really good.

MS: I really like the big top and all of the extra animals. The circus was bigger and cooler.

RS: I enjoyed the few scenes that took place in the bar. the choreography timing in both were really well done.

RS: Do you have a favorite character?

ES: I liked the Dog-Boy. His makeup was really good.

MS: I like Barnum, he’s really fun to watch.

RS: Yes, he’s very charismatic. I like Carlyle too. I like that he grows as a person over the film.

RS: The songs in the movie are really fun and catchy. Do you have a favorite?

MS: The songs in the bar, especially the one with everyone cheering up Barnum.

ES: The one the circus performers sing about breaking boundaries. They know that they’re worth more and they stand up for themselves. I think that’s important.

RS: I agree. There are a lot of really great messages in the movie and I think that’s the biggest- to be who you without shame. I really like the Greatest Show- it reminded me of going to see the circus with my dad when I was young.

ES: We should buy the soundtrack so we can listen to the songs in the car!

MS: Yeah! If they do a sing-a-long at the Alamo (Drafthouse) we’ll be ready! (hint, hint Alamo)

RS: I think that is a great idea. Would you boys want to see it again when it comes out in theaters?

ES: I think we should. We know lots of people who would really like it.

The Greatest Showman is bright and fun, full of wonder, and magic. It is appropriate for the whole family and provides entertainment and has a strong message- Love who you love. Be who you are. Live the impossible.
