If any of you are like me, and I know some of you are, you were completely blown away by Neill Blomkamp’s feature film debut, District 9. It was the breakthrough sci-fi action hit of 2009! Alien invasion, hard-core future weapons technology, human-alien DNA cross contamination, and possibly the greatest 3D animation seen up to that time (this last part could be debated, I suppose, but go with me on this, K?). And all of that on top of the themes of social and cultural justice that truly resonated with me.
Elysium looks like the next level for Blomkamp. Taking the issues of social justice again into the future, this time in a Freejack meets Bladerunner meets, I don’t know, Mad Max maybe, type of thing.
The year is 2154, and the very wealthy live on a luxury space station in Earth’s orbit, while the rest of humanity live on the overpopulated and ruined surface.
Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley (my fave!) star… without further ado, here’s the brand new trailer!
There are definitely heavy influences of William Gibson and Philip K Dick going on in this film. Elysium is now officially the film I am most excited about this year.
