I honestly wanted to stay away from everything Blade Runner 2049 when it was announced. I saw the first Blade Runner in June of 1982 in theaters and I have never been the same cinematically. It is what I base any and all sci-fi movie’s to this day.
Ridley Scott changed me as a director and when I heard that a Blade Runner sequel was on the horizon I was mortified. Then when I heard that Denis Villeneuve was going to direct it I was somewhat relieved but still very disturbed by the fact they even wanted to make a sequel. Coming from his very successful Sicario and followed up by Arrival I felt a sigh of, OK it’s gonna happen and if Denis Villeneuve is going to direct it it may not be so bad.
I can’t say at what point the excitement started but I think it was around when the studio started to release photos and assign character rolls to actors. So I waited and decided I’m not going to watch trailers. They may be disappointing to me and I will build a distaste for the movie. I wanted to keep the shroud of mystery for as long as I could.
Then word around the campfire was that there would be 3 prequel short’s that would be coming in the next several months, each which document some event that has transpired between the first Blade Runner and the sequel.
I had to watch them.
Here is the first one that has Jared Leto who plays Niander Wallace that was released on August 29th that was Directed by Ridley Scott’s son, Luke Scott.
I present 2036: Nexus Dawn
The 2nd of the 3 was released on September 13, 2017. This time the short was set just a year before the new movie in 2048. This short also directed by Luke Scott has Dave Bautista who plays a character named Sapper Morton doing what apparently he does best. Watch it below and you will understand.
Up next is 2048: Nowhere to Run
And last but not least is Cowboy Bebop creator/director Shinichirō Watanabe directed the almost 16 minute anime featurette.
UPDATE: Looks like Crunchyroll has the rights to this video and has blocked all versions of it online with copyright infringement
