No doubt about it, I’m a huge fan of Tom Whalen (read the interview I did with him a while back HERE). Sadly I wasn’t in the game when he dropped his officially licensed Star Wars print, Palace. But I was fortunate enough to jump on board with his first Disney licensed print, Steamboat Willie. Over time I have found that more and more of my framed artwork is by Mr. Whalen.

Recently he announced a solo show at Gallery 1988. First thought, great, there goes more of my money!

I love the idea behind the show, specifically its roots. From the artist himself:

Back in 2004, as a time-killer between day-job projects, I created a series of notecard-sized pop culture busts. Taking inspiration from comics, films, and TV, I took them to cons and sat them beside the ‘zine my buddies and I were dutifully publishing. The busts quickly became my calling card and over the years, folks would visit my table to see what new characters I had illustrated.

Flash forward to 2013. when Gallery 1988 offered me a solo show, I realized that it had been almost ten (!) years since I started to create those original pieces. I saw the opportunity to create a fresh new series of busts that reflect my current style and serve as a throwback to my early work.

This show is a collector’s dream. Every piece will be 8″ x 8″ with very limited runs of 75. Tom also let us know that he wanted to create pieces that were bite-sized in both dimensions and price at $20 a piece! As if that wasn’t enough, some pieces will have 1/1 metal editions, not to mention original sketches and two original handmade pieces!

With all that great info, I almost forgot the exclusive reveals Tom sent our way. Check them out and let us know what you think!

I'm a true child of the 80s from a small town near Cleveland, Ohio. My all time favorite topics are Star Wars, slasher films and Cleveland sports (despite the misery it causes). I narrowly avoided law school, instead choosing film school. I have been accused of being a walking IMDB, but I take it as a compliment!
