Nerdlocker Movie Review: The Disaster Artist

The Disaster Artist is a movie about making “the best worst movie ever made“- The Room. If you have never seen The Room, which has gathered a cult following in the last few years, I highly recommend you check it out first before diving into The Disaster Artist. Fortunately, it’s being shown in a lot of theaters around the country right now in order to prepare people. Do keep in mind that a lot of the current showings are interactive screenings where people shout and throw things at the screen- it’s an extremely fun way to see the film, just be prepared.

The Disaster Artist is about the the friendship between the eccentric Tommy Wiseau and naive Greg Sestero while they make The Room, a film about… the honest truth is- it’s actually hard to say what it’s about because there are so many story lines that are brought up and never revisited, but the IMDB describes it as the story of “Johnny, a successful banker who lives happily in a San Francisco townhouse with his fiancé, Lisa. One day, inexplicably, she gets bored with him and decides to seduce his best friend, Mark.” They didn’t use all of the ones that they shot in the main film but they took the time to recreate a few of the scenes from the The Room with The Disaster Artist cast.

Here is one that did make it into the movie.

Greg is played by Dave Franco, and Tommy is played with unnerving accuracy by James Franco. The amount of effort that went into them matching the original movie scene by scene had to have been immense, but it’s so gratifying. The entire cast is spot on in their portrayals and are amazingly fun to watch. I would recommend not checking the rest of the cast list so that you can be surprised by the insanity. But do stay until after the credits to see an extra scene that didn’t make it into the movie… and in case you have a sudden need for The Room accessories or just a general desire to think to yourself “wow, that happened…” visit –
