There are so many comic conventions that I couldn’t possibly name them all. While San Diego Comic Con is the convention that even your Aunt has heard of, there are some gems in cities that are not located in Southern California. Tomorrow is the start of the 15th Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, WA. In my opinion it’s a Goldilocks convention that is the perfect blend of big name guests and size that makes for an enjoyable con experience. So I am very excited to share some of the panels, artists, and events that I’m looking forward to and that are worth taking a look at if you’re joining me this weekend in the Pacific Northwest.
Panel: Real-Time Game Design!
Join four local game designers as they take audience suggestions and design a tabletop game live in under an hour! They’ll also be discussing their design processes, basic game design principles, and sharing useful resources for aspiring game designers!
Time: 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM Location: WSCC 210
Artist: Becky Cloonan
Becky Cloonan is an artist that I first learned about as a follower of Mondo, the pop culture posters, toys, just about everything shop, a few years back. She has done some very interesting work for them alongside her other endeavors and I can’t wait to see what she’s bringing with her.
As a collector of enamel pins I’m very excited to see this Southern California pin company on the exhibitor list. Their range of pins covers everything in pop culture.
This is one of those panels that is perfect for ECCC. A niche show that might get overshadowed in a bigger convention but cool enough that I can’t wait to see this panel. It’s one of my most anticipated things at this years convention.
Time: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Location: Main Stage – WSCC 4A
Artist: Bruce Yan
My first ever poster drop was the first Glow in the Dark show by Bottleneck Gallery and in that order was a print by Bruce. He does some great work and will have some interesting stuff for sale including a clever Starbucks x Little Mermaid mashup.
Exhibitor: Cards Against Humanity
A booth for one of the most unique, funny, and interesting game companies out there? A must-stop.
Strangers was one of my favorite shows of the last year. I may just have to binge watch it before Saturday’s panel.
Time: 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM Location: Main Stage – WSCC 4A
Artist: Jim Mahfood
To be honest, I ran across Jim’s name while looking at the list of artists and his name stood out. I came across him last ECCC and after looking at more of his work I am now a fan. So while I don’t know everything about him I definitely will be checking out his booth.
At first glance an Asian grocery store being at ECCC doesn’t make sense until you think about how awesome Green Tea Kit-Kats are and then I’m sold. The PNW go to for Asian groceries will be selling snacks and treats during the convention.
I’ve been to voice panels before and they are guaranteed fun. With a lineup that includes Troy Baker, Maurice LaMarche, and John DiMaggio among other greats I’m sure this will be a can’t-miss panel.
Artist: Gene Luen Yang
This is a guest pick as my roommate speaks very highly of Mr. Yang’s work and after learning more about what that works is I’m happy to add it on my list of stops.
Exhibitor: Whimsic Alley
I used to love going to their Los Angeles headquarters when I lived there. No better place to have a Harry Potter themed party in the US than Whimsic Alley. Can’t wait to drop a little cash at their booth.
So that’s a short look at some of the many fun things to see, buy, and do at Emerald City Comic Con that I’m looking forward to. ECCC 2017 is March 2nd through 5th at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, WA.
