And as well as it should be. Beasts of No Nation is a war story filled with amazing cinematography and masterful Direction by Cary Joji Fukunaga (who was also was the chief cinematographer) from True Detective fame, and with jaw dropping performances from an incredibly talented cast, they should be up for more then just the two awards.
The story is about Agu, a young boy who lives a happy life with a happy family in Africa and is forced into becoming a child solider during one of many the conflicts within his country. But there is so much more going on. Its much deeper then just a movie of war torn Africa.
Keep your eyes peeled, I will be doing a movie review soon.
Abraham Attah who plays Agu convinces me that war is violent and ugly and psychologically damaging, but the award nod should and does go to the talented Idris Elba who plays the “Commandment.” Idris makes me wholeheartedly believe and feel the tyranny in his character. That’s why he is nominated for Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor in Supporting Role for a Golden Globe and Screen Actor Guild Award.
Here is what Idris had to say about his SAG nomination.
“Wow I’m just floored and humbled right now. It’s such a huge honor to be recognized by my friends and peers and for two projects that have really been such an important part of my life, Luther and Beasts of No Nation. It goes without saying that my performance is shared with the tremendous actors I work with. Congratulations to Abraham Attah, Kurt Egyiawan and the rest of the amazing cast from BEASTS!”

Here is what he had to say about his HFPA/ Golden Globe Nomination.
“Wow thank you to the HFPA, who have always been so amazingly supportive of me throughout my career. I’m so excited, in particular, to be recognized for both Luther and Beasts of No Nation. For Luther, what better way to celebrate the end of a great run than with this stellar acknowledgement. As for Beasts, I can only hope this attention will get more people to see the brilliance of all that is Cary Fukunaga and my extraordinary co-star Abraham Attah. I share in this exciting moment with everyone who poured their hearts into these projects and for who I could not have done this without.”
-Idris Elba
Kudos to a great project with great talent. And even more kudos to outlets like Netflix for taking creative chances with topics such a Beast of No Nation.
