Nerdlocker was able to get an interview with Casper Van Dien at the Motor City Comic Con. The star of Starship Troopers reminisces about being a part of a science fiction action movie that was on the cutting edge of CGI as well as several of other roles he’s been fortunate to play. Casper has a great sense of humor and it was our pleasure to spend some time with this lively, fun-loving actor who appreciates his art and his fans!
The transcript of this interview appears below and the audio is at the bottom of the page.
Nerdlocker (NL): This is Nerdlocker and we’re here with Casper Van Dien from Starship Troopers. Hey, Casper, how are you doing?
Casper Van Dien (CVD): I’m doing well. How are you doing?
NL: I’m doing alright. My first question is, was it difficult doing Starship Troopers with all that CGI that was in there, fighting these bugs that you couldn’t really see at the time?
CVD: Nah, it was so much fun! It’s nothing compared to actually being on set and being around these people and shooting something and being a part of it and just playing. It’s just like being a kid! Because when you’re a kid you get to pretend you have all these things happening too. You can imagine anything. So as an actor it’s fantastic. And then when you get to see it come to life on the screen, it’s just surreal.
NL: That was going to be my next question. What was it like to see those bugs on the screen finally.
CVD: It was unbelievable. I loved it. I loved every second of it.
NL: Very cool. Now most people know you from Starship Troopers but on IMDB you’ve got over 80 titles that you’ve been involved in. What are some of the other things that people who are into comics and sci-fi and those kinds of things also would be interested in seeing that you’re in?
CVD: Well, I was the 20th Tarzan. Tarzan is always a great comic. He’s an iconic character. I was also in Sleepy Hollow and I’m the new Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat.
NL: Oh, awesome! That’s really cool.
CVD: Yeah, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2.
NL: Our last question comes from one of your fans. Mike Smith wants to know, “Are you rated to repair an M3 tactical helmet?”
CVD: [With a big grin] Obviously not!
NL: Hey, it’s been a pleasure, Casper, I appreciate the time.
CVD: Thank you.
NL: This has been Nerdlocker, the place for your inner nerd, with Casper Van Dien.
Thanks to Mr. Van Dien for the interview and for being so welcoming to your fans. Of all the media guests, you were one of the most engaging and friendly. Something else we learned is that Mr. Van Dien and his wife have formed a production company together, Holy Cow Entertainment, with a unique vision to produce socially responsible, quality family entertainment. While killing giant alien bugs is awesome, we think that’s even cooler!
