Marvel Now series first issue of The Punisher, came off as gritty and dark as you would expect The Punisher would be. Nathan Edmondson brings a setting in his writing that comes off as a movie. He makes Frank Castle wage his vigilante war on criminal activities dirty and brutal. Unlike Punisher’s superhero counterparts. Edmondson plays off that sense of individuality of a man who can only do so much and how his resources go only so far as The Punisher himself.
Now add Mitch Gerads artwork to Edmondson’s writing and you have this raw format that I have not seen in a Marvel book in a while. Gerads’s illustration is beautifully done. The straight forward panels are entertaining, not by just the way it was drawn but how the subtlety brings the work from a serious tone to a funny spectacle in one panel. Definitely pick this one up. Edmondson made Black Widow into something that no one expected and he does the same thing to The Punisher! The end result of the book itself and who comes into the factor makes you wanting the second issue.
I’m giving The Punisher #1, 4.5 out of 5 Nerdskulls!!
