We all know the story behind the tragedy of Aurora, Colorado. The horrible events that took place affected all of us in one way or another, whether we’re nerds or not. It was an unimaginable act that even I still can’t fully comprehend. It’s something that everyone wants to help make better, but perhaps just don’t know how to do so.
The local Las Vegas charity group, Very Awesome Girls Into Nerdy Activities, was so affected by the tragedy that the girls in the group decided to do something about it. The Bat Signal of Hope was created in an effort to raise money for the victims of the tragedy. HellPop Comics, The Sci Fi Center, Cosmic Comics and Alternate Reality Comics all hosted the bake and craft sale. Alternate Reality Comics even donated 20% of proceeds from sales that occured during the event. Baked goods and crafts were sold with 100% of the proceeds going straight to Aurora, Colorado.
My heart has never been so warmed as it was when I saw how many people gathered at Alternate Reality Comics, buying goodies and taking photos holding signs with strong words such as “Rise,” “Hope,” and “Geek Love,” to send to the victims. Large cards were also made available for donors to write words of hope and draw sketches for the victims as well.
The community really knew how to rally together for this incredible cause. Some people stopped by the shops for no reason but to make donations, with no desire for anything that was for sale in return. One woman who stopped by Alternate Reality Comics donated $20 because her son was a regular at the store, and her daughter lived just 5 miles from the movie theatre where the shooting took place.
This event was the definition of one of the words on those signs: Hope. It was a great opportunity to remind us all that even in tragedy, there is still good in the world. These people gathered at four shops in Las Vegas to support and donate some of their hard-earned money to people they didn’t even know. They were all able to rise above the tragedy and make something good out of a horrendous situation. My biggest wish is that these photos and cards of love make their way to the victims and remind them that there is hope after tragedy.
