Chew #31
Writer: John Layman
Artist: Rob Guillory
Publisher: Image
Issue thirty-one of Chew starts off a new arc called Bad Apples, this issue being one of five. Tony’s fraternal twin sister has passed away, and his family is pressuring him to find who killed her. In the meantime, Tony and John are back on an FDA case to try and figure out why so many people are combusting and burning to a crisp! My significant other has the first trade of Chew and I really wanted to sit down and read it, I just haven’t had a chance to yet. Reading this issue instantly caught my attention and love. The humor is awesome and the witty relationship Tony and John have is unstoppable. Rob’s art style has character and is executed beautifully; very clean and recognizable. I would consider this series a mature comic, due to the language and the fact that Tony is biting people to see their past, but I highly recommend it. Great series, and I can’t wait to see if Tony avenges his sister! Without a doubt, I give this 5 out of 5 Nerdskulls!

The Massive #8
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Garry Brown
Publisher: Dark Horse
This issue is part two of three in the mini-series Subcontinental. I appreciated that the first page of the issue caught me up with the current events of the story and explained the characters. It is nice being able to jump right into an issue and understand what has happened in the previous. Mary is being held in a cell while Israel is being beaten up for information, while Ryan, Georg, and Mag are staying with Yusup. And poor Lars is still on the ship, following plans Israel left for him. This series is drawn like an action movie; any time the ocean is shown on a page, it looks violent and roaring, and I can see why Lars would feel so sea sick! With facial close-ups and action-filled panels, this series reads like a film. I enjoyed this issue, but I am eager to see how this mini-series wraps up. For now, I give this 4 out of 5 Nerdskulls.
