Artists Pick Their Favorite Posters from MondoCon 2017

Mondokhaaan!!! Last weekend (November 4th and 5th), freaks and geeks (artists and collectors) flocked to Austin, TX for MondoCon 2017, the preeminent shindig for limited edition screen printed movie posters. It was a flash of a weekend that consisted of panels, screenings, fun times with familiar faces, food, lines, and more art than you can fit in your flat files. Legendary artist William Stout called MondoCon “the best curated show in the country.”

It’s always a joy to walk the con floor, talk with artists, check out their booths, get some prints signed, and peruse the various limited edition collectibles for sale, including movie posters, art prints, pins, soundtracks, tee shirts, and other odds and ends. I’m always curious which prints the artists are into, so I went to them one by one and asked if they had a favorite poster from the con. It was interesting to see what everybody picked, and while there was a variety of responses, when it was all said and done there was one name that I had written down a lot more than any other:

Matthew Woodson aka Ghostco

It was the year of the Ghost. Woodson’s 2001: A Space Odyssey poster (sold at the Mondo booth) was undoubtedly the favorite print of MondoCon 2017, and close behind it were his 3 TMNC (Tomorrow May Never Come) art prints (also sold as an uncut sheet). Artists and collectors were enamored with his work.

The 2001 is stunning. The monolith is dark dark black and it shines in a way that might lead you to believe that it was printed with a varnish layer, but that’s not how they achieved the effect. It was actually printed on a specialty paper and the monolith is the shiny black paper showing through the negative space. The poster is a jaw-dropper; an instant classic. Just look at these quotes:

“Top 5 Mondo poster ever. It’s a game changer.” — Daniel Danger

“Top 5 Mondo print of all-time.” — Eric Garza, Creative Director at Mondo

“Top 10 Mondo print of all-time.” — Mitch Putnam, Creative Director/Co-founder of Mondo

(pics don’t do it justice)

For those keeping track, Matthew Woodson’s 2001: A Space Odyssey poster was mentioned 19 times(!) and his TMNC set came up 9 times. Crazy. Way to go, Ghostco. Cheers to all the artists who pour their hearts into this pretty paper and to the fans who make this hobby what it is. See you all next year!
